AB Women in Russia suffer from an overall lack of information of
contraception options, STD symptoms, rape, and sexual issues in general.
Women's clinics which provide gynecological services for most Russian
women often fail to give them the necessary information in an acceptable
non-threatening manner. These problems, combined with the current
economic and social situation, make Russian women especially vulnerable
for HIV. A comprehensive program was developed containing the following
elements: Evaluation was conducted using questionnaires to determine the
level of knowledge about STD/HIV/AIDS and risk perception among women as
well as among medical personnel in women's clinics. Educational
brochures were developed on the basis of the evaluation, pre-tested in
focus groups. Workshops were held for health professionals and for
activists in the women's movement to train them to use the brochures in
educating women about STD/HIV/AIDS.
